Ida Lupino was such a talent. Born into a theatrical family in England, she'd memorised all of Shakespeare's female roles by the age 10 ! She was an actress, writer, co-producer and director and even wrote music as a hobby. A pioneer who showed that women could direct films if only given the chance. Her films often tackled social issues eg Not Wanted in 1949 about an unmarried mother and The Bigamist in 1953. This is a really tense drama with great performances from the three main characters. I like the fact that the Mexican characters speak Spanish, all adds to the authenticity. A film from 70 years ago which is still great today.
A hugely underrated actress as well.
I loved The Bigamist.
Lots of love from India.
Thanks for sharing this information! I watched this film on a whim having not heard of it before, and didn't know any of that. I'm really interested in watching more of her work now. Cheers!
I love the fact that it was a woman who made this raw story with that great, tough leading actor. At the time that was (probably) unheard of. There's still not too many women directors who film raw movies like that..
I really enjoyed this movie, it kept me glued to the screen all throughout the movie. Such great acting on their part to keep the movie going strong from beginning to end. I have to tip my hat to them. They need get an Oscar for their part. This is one movie I will never forget.
Very riveting. I enjoyed this immensely. Great actors. It reminds me unfortunately of my grandmother's youngest brother, who was murdered by a hitchhiker he picked up late one night on his way back to his home in Altoona, PA. He was a chaplain in the war--in the European theater--and had been wounded and walked with a cane. It was the only time my mother said she saw my grandmother cry, losing her youngest brother in this way. It was 1951, I believe.
Wow! Little Ida Lupino can make one hell of a taut thriller. This was great. I'll have to seriously look up her other films. You have an amazing collection and excellent taste in your selections of Cult Cinema Classics. I promise that if you keep a posting 'em, I'll keep a watching 'em. Thanks again CCF. Your channel is THE BEST!
Little...? Wonder if you'd apply the same adjective to an adult man. Except I know you wouldn't. This is why great female directors don't get as many opportunities, pervading condescending attitudes like yours.
I remember Talman's public service commercials about smoking. He even stated that he was dying.
The film was marketed with the tagline: "When was the last time you invited death into your car?"
Thanks @CCC!
I'm glad the two "buddies" came out alive. They were loyal to each other. I'm glad he wacked him several punches😂
Qualité d'image irréprochable. Et encore des sous titres français. Je vous aime. Encore merci ^^
What a great film, produced for about 100,000 usd , about 1.2 million today , it really aged well . This film is better then most 30 plus million dollar movies of today .
😊❤❤❤ THIS BEAUTIFUL CLASSIC MOVIE. GREAT ACTING TOO. THERE ARE OTHERS GREAT MOVIES FROM THE 1940 TO. 1950'S
CCC always has the best quality films.
Except when they get colorized. Those ones are not very well colorized. The ones shown in their original formats, be it black and white or originally filmed in color, now those, usually uploaded in HD are of great quality. Those copies of films I really like.
The classic that inspired another cult classic: The Hitcher
Of course had to be made by the great Ida Lupino
Thank's CCC for another great classic! We appreciate the effort! A great veiw !✌👍

I'm in PST zone and the Premiere is ending before its over . I've got a frozen picture on my television and live running music/dialog . I'm watching the ending on my electronic device .
Scott George there are 2 things to check: you might need to click refresh on your tv? Let us know how that works next time! But also is your google account set to your true Timezone? We have found that if it isn’t the premiere notice time will be off?
@@CultCinemaClassics Thanks , I'll check into it. Great movie last night 😉
It's so interesting seeing the District Attorney playing a crazed psychotic killer. Such a great tight thriller by the talented Ida "The doors made me do it...the doors made me do it!" Lupino.
This is one of those films that have their essence, that are unique and great. I really enjoyed it. It is a great film and they are not just words. This is one of the best films I have seen and I am glad I was able to see it.
Obviously a masterpiece. Ida Lupino was a great director. Possibly the only film noir set in a desert?
Such a concise tight forceful 70 minutes. full HD too! great stuff
I love this movie. Jim Morrison of The Doors got the idea of a (killing) hitchhiker script because of this movie. You can see Morrison's script in one of his poetry books + in his swansong 'Riders On The Storm' he talks about a killing hitchhiker too (+ in the special version on the album 'An American Prayer') "The hitchhiker stood by the side o/t road and levelled his thumb in the calm calculus of reason". That's his personal image/symbol: the hitchhiker, alone, by the side of the open road. These were among the last lines he wrote in his Paris Journal in '71. PS: The movie 'The Hitcher' with Rutger Hauer was inspired by Morrison's script too. 👍🏝🏜🚙
There are two scenes from this film that reminded me of other movies: the gun reveal at 6:45 looks similar to the 'Marvin and the Gun' incident from Pulp Fiction and the film's clothes-switching twist at the end seems a lot like the ending of Crocodile Dundee 2.
Absolutely brilliant. Gripping and very tense from the get go. Enjoy
Damn that was a great movie. Thanks for uploading.
I haven't picked up a hitchhiker ever since I saw The Hitcher with Rutger Hauer -- scared the pants off me
Good move.
Smart.
But if ... On some stormy night, out in the middle of nowhere, you should pick me up hitching ...
Well ... Let's just say this:
You'd still be laughing your ass off ... Miles down the road from where you dropped me off.
And you'd feel good about yourself for helping me out.
I've done a lot of hitching in my time. But that was in the good ol days. Nowadays people are paranoid. Like you. Can't blame em though.
@@tonytafoya6217 While hitching through Europe I was given a lift by two truck-drivers in Italy. Not realising I understood Italian they started arguing about which of them was going to "have" me first on the bunk at the back. At that point I clutched my stomach and started groaning. They asked what was wrong and I pointed to my stomach and said: "Bambino". The brakes were slammed on and I was dumped out of that truck so fast. That was scary.
Too many women a paranoid also .@@tonytafoya6217
Excelent old fashioned movie. Good action from the beginning.
For those that don't know (but a lot of y'all probably do), the murderer in this movie is portrayed by William Talman. Most famous for his role as L.A. District Attorney Hamilton Burger from the "Perry Mason" t.v. series.
I can see how Mr. Talman could have easily been type cast--sort of squirrely evil eyes--but yeah made goodguy with Perry Mason
@@daisywomack7587 A good guy who never won a case.
I couldn't believe that was William Talman. He played Hamilton Burger, the district attorney in Perry Mason. He makes a pretty good bad guy. First time I saw Ida Lupino was in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. She was gorgeous.
@@ronratcliffe2219 Thank you, I'll check that out. Have you ever seen an old movie with young Angela Landsbury? She was in "The Picture of Dorian Gray". She was a knockout!
Ida Lupino with Edward G Robinson in the 1941 Sea Wolf was her best movie.
Many, many thanks for the upload! Excellent film.
Apparently the only "film noir" directed by a lady (at least during the "film noir" period).
Good movie. Talman was great in this.
i saw this movie around 40 yrs ago and i still love it
What a great CLASSIC , just saw this on TCM couple of weeks ago , LOVE to see it again now👍
I remember seeing this movie on TCM too, but it was a few months ago
@@Omar-wq9dz AWESOME 👍
Love how Collins looks like Mike from Red Letter Media.
Good movie! I watch it at least twice a yr❤😊
He will always be known as the prosecutor on the "perry mason" tv show
I missed him when he was off the show for a few months.
Frank Lovejoy was a great actor
Good film. Nice and tense.
It was ironic when Talman's character didn't pick up the packet of Chesterfields that fell out of the first couple's car and later refused the cigarette offered to him. In fact Talman was a chain smoker and died of lung cancer.
This is a really good movie, I like it. And that guy that plays Emmett Meyers is just ugly and creepy enough to be convincing as a hitchhiker.
Excellent acting and directing.
Saw this on Talking Pictures channel a few years ago - great film.
It's very funny to see District Attorney Burger play the role of a criminal
I Love this Movie 💓 I just watched it live stream too 💓🎈 Thumbs Up for you 😍 Thanks 💓🎈 I watch it often 💓🎈 Happy Easter 😍🤗 Stay Well 😍💓🎈
Ida Lapino directed some of the Gilligan's Island episodes.
She did a lot of TV. Thriller, The Twilight Zone, and The Untouchables.
thanks♥arigatou ありがとう!面白かったです!
I miss old Hollywood. Good movie
Great movie. They sure knew how to make them back in the 50s. Does anyone know what the bag was for that was hanging on the front bumper of their car?
It's a water bag. Very common sight on vehicles frequently traveling desert areas.
Спасибо,Гугл,за перевод.
Excellent film.
Great suspense thriller, but it has already been on A&E and TCM several times
Rewatchable movie
Muy buena película. Quiza adelantada a su tiempo
Parece como de los 70s o principios de 80s
The hitch hiker never needed sleep
movies today are all about the actors , this movies are all about the acting
28 years of age? Obviously had one helluva hard life then --- looks as if he's been digging trenches with his face.
classic!
To think you thought you were helping someone leading to your demise😢
Bun film ,vechi dar minunat și interesant .
Good
👊🔥
bom filme recomendo
Merci ! Sous titres pour tous vos films svp
It's Hamilton "Ham" Burger. DA on Perry Mason. Wm Talman.
😶 Se balader en plein désert avec des cannes à pêche alors qu'on est en route pour nul part, fallait y penser 😆😆 !!
👻
😂
Bonjour 👍🏻
If I remember it was loosely based on a true story
It is. Lupino got permission from the guys that were kidnapped to use real events in the movie. The censors actually made her cut back the killings - in real life he also killed a family of 5.
Yes, a real psychopath who kidnapped two men
@@anonagain not to be confused with the IN COLD BLOOD murders
I seen the 1983 hitchhiker movie.
ESTA YA LA VI
Basit ve kötü bir final olmuş
O, iki adam önce ağzını burnunu kırdıktan sonra polisler gelmeliydi.
👍
👍👍👍👍
What's up with the hitchhiker's ears?
Bun
Very Bad plot & unbelievable... two grown men kidnapped for days and couldn't even get the gun away from the villain.
prise d otages trop longue insuportable
The geology of that country is very monotonous ;)
Police on the lookout in POLICE CARS and in UNIFORMS is stupidity in this situation.
The police must look like ordinary citizens, in plain clothes, and make the search in ordinary-looking, but sturdy civilian cars.
Spanish please
America’s the same as English had a good look, until the Muslims came,
